About the Artworks
Constellation Field
The Constellation Field drawings are made up of anatomical spirit-bodies in motion, layers of connecting patterns, and spirals and coils woven across the image. They are a result of the combined influence of ancient Chinese philosophy, spirituality and medicine; Spiral Dynamics and the field of adult consciousness development; and of constellation practices (as per Bert Hellinger, Franz Rupert, etc.) used in family therapy and coaching.
Constellations are truly one of the great wonders of the world, to be experienced to be believed. They reveal underlying patterns of our existence, family and other affiliations, and dysfunctional 'entanglements' with people alive and with those who have passed. It is fascinating to note while observing and participating in many constellations that these underlying patterns and 'entanglements' seen in constellations support many of the tenets of ancient Chinese philosophy and spirituality (in ancient Chinese philosophy, the connection to our ancestors is represented by Ground or Earth, and the connection to our spirit is represented by the Sky or Heaven). Our identities are significantly influenced by those who came before. Whether that influence is on our culture and traditions, or through beliefs, value, and attitudes from exposure to trauma such as war, genocide, or slavery; and our sense of connectedness and belonging through our ties to our family history and ancestry. These manifest in our lives in ways known and unknown through patterns of connection.
The main idea from Spiral Dynamics and adult consciousness development (as presented by Keagan, Wilber, Hawkins, Cook-Greuter, et al) is that we are evolving in many more ways well beyond the traditional Darwinian idea of evolution. Our cultures and societies are evolving through recognizable stages of development; and we, individually, if we choose, can also develop our very own levels of conscious awareness through recognizable stages. These evolutionary forces are often likened to a rising spiral as we go through stages of every increasing complexity and rising to new heights of awareness.
These related ideas about identity, connection, and growth coalesce to form the basis and the principal influences in the creation of these Constellation Field artworks.
Biomorphic
The Biormorphic drawings are abstract artworks based on the some of the same ideas as found in the Constellation Field artworks. The word biomorphic means to have the form of a living organism. These artworks represent shapes, patterns and movement of the living world, in nature, and also beyond our world into the cosmos.
The artworks feature organic, curvilinear forms and shapes inspired by living organisms or found elsewhere in nature. They include rounded, irregular, or flowing forms that are reminiscent of natural structures such as plants, animals, or the human body. These shapes and patterns are intended to evoke a sense of organic life and movement, or to explore the relationships between the living world, nature, and the cosmos.
